The groot trek PDF Print E-mail
Dear Ma

It is that time of the year again.  Men from all over the country are preparing for the groot trek to go and camp there in Zululand.  This time me and Boet are prepared and we are not going to make the same mistakes as last time we went to that other camp.

You remember how I told you about all those people with the aeries and choppers that were flying around the place the whole time and didn't want to land.  Well, we were crouching in the mielieland because we didn't want to walk to the long drop.  The camp rules said not to do that but we decided to get back to nature.  Boet said that mielieblare is just as good as witgoud and even if there was no mielieblare we would just drip dry like a modderkoek.  Boet did get some funny rash and aarbeie later but I don't think it had anything to do with the mielies.

Anyways, while we were making our contribution to the mielieland we met one of the pilots.  His name is Wingnut.  Apparently he was one of the guys who was flying over the farm the whole time but he says it wasn't to have fun.  He thought he could sommer land right there on the farm but when he got there the farm looked like the N1 parking lot between Pretoria and Jo'burg in peak traffic.  Eventually he ran out of fuel and somme landed somewhere in the koppies and walked all the way.  I told him: boet, you should listen when they tell you to stick to the rules.  I don't understand it but he somme gave me a klap when I told him that Boet read about another air field on their website.

That reminds me about how we got there.  They said that every vehicle should have a paper or sticker in the wind screen the same colour as the camp that you are going to.  We were in the RED camp.  Lucky for us we remembered to stop at the garage to fill up with petrol and Boet made the biggest RED sticker out of a lappie and tamatiesous you have ever seen.  As we were driving there were lots of signs with different colours.  I was driving so fast... it looked like a rainbow.  I think we were supposed to follow the RED arrows but we missed it and I decided to take the GREEN route.  It wasn't so bad but then we had to drive to Maputu to get back to the RED camp so lucky for us it only took two days more to get to our camp.

I don't have too much time to write to you now, but I will write to you every week.  Promise.

Your loving son,

Piet

Got tickets from that other guy

Dear Ma

You remember how last time I told you about my remembering that is not so well after we drank the water from some funny pipe.  Now I remember.  They told us to bring our own drinking water but we used the water for cooking so we had to get drinking water too.  I phoned to ask if we could plug our karavaan's tuinslang into the water pipe and can you believe it... they said NO!!!  So we started digging for water (like they do in the movies) and we found a pipe.  We were so happy.  The water looked like your gemmerbier so then we knew we hit the jackpot!  I still don't know why nobody else wanted to use our water.  But they brought lots of their own tanks so that's ok.

I have to tell you about how we got our tickets.
